March 8 Council and Economic Development Items

At Thursday's meeting,  city council will consider authorizing a design contract for the proposed pedestrian bridge over 6th Avenue at the light rail station,  This is another step toward getting Golden ready for the coming of the first train -- and passengers -- in May 2013.

Discussion of two agenda items will affect Golden's future economic development, which is essential to providing services that meet the needs of community members. The first is a quarterly update from GURA, a champion of downtown Golden since its creation in 1989.  After 2014, GURA will not have tax increment financing available, so council and the GURA board are considering the creation of a Development Authority to maintain, protect, and enhance our downtown after that revenue stream sunsets.

The second discussion involves possible support of Foothills Art Center's acclaimed Chihuly Venetians Exhibit, which is expected to draw over 19,000 visitors to Golden from April 7-June 30. These visitors will be spending money in our local stores and restaurants.

And energizing economic news comes from Golden's long-time neighbor and partner, MillerCoors.  An aluminum pint packaging line has been installed in the Golden Brewery -- representing  $25 million of commitment and investment in the Golden valley.   Consumers will be seeing these innovative aluminum pints in the market place soon--here is a preview.
