Golden's Volunteer Corps--and More Opportunities

It's a truism:  Golden residents step up whenever and wherever they see a need. Yesterday, the Golden Civic Foundation's fund-raising efforts culminated in awards of thousands of dollars to worthy museums, schools, and  other non-profit groups. Another example of residents' willingness to serve Golden's interests can be found in the number of impressive applicants for openings on our Sustainability Board.

An important opportunity to perform a short-term community service is coming right up.  Golden residents, business owners, and employees may apply for four positions on the Blue Ribbon Panel, which is charged with evaluating the potential gap between the level of revenues the City of Golden currently expects over the next two decades, and the costs of maintaining or enhancing the current level of high-quality services and amenities. The panel will then offer the community a range of options for minimizing that gap. An initial meeting will take place in March, with additional meetings to be scheduled from March to July.  If this is an area of interest,  please review the additional information and application (to be turned in by February 22) on the city website's blue-ribbon-panel page.

Also next week, the Planning Department would appreciate involved residents' sharing their thoughts on the future of Golden's South neighborhoods. Open houses will be held at the Golden Community (Rec) Center on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 4:00-5:30 p.m. and 6:30-8:00 p.m.  If you are unable to come in person, visit the planning department's web page, review the draft South Neighborhood Plan, and provide your comments.

And as the days turn longer and the weather warms, even more volunteer opportunities will present themselves.  Consider giving time to school events, downtown street fairs, neighborhood projects, USA Pro-Cycling Challenge race day, and the many other activities planned by our community organizations.
