Events, Awards, and Honors

The Golden Fire Department Class of 2012 graduated in a moving ceremony held this Saturday morning, August 18. Thirteen recruits were hand-picked from eighty applicants and all thirteen graduated with flying colors. They are Nathan Beckman, Mitsu Binns (from the Golden Gate Fire Protection District), Jessica Crump, Charles Grandberg, Dillon Hallock, Dusty King, Ryan Masica, Zach McCreary, Jonathan Priestly, Zeljko Spiric, Tony Stephenson, Mitchell Sturm, and Chase Whitaker. The graduates will join our other volunteer firefighters in protecting the residents of Golden, inspired by the GFD's motto "Desire to Service, Courage to Act."

The picture above doesn't do justice to the recruits' wonderful gift to Training Division Lieutenant Jeanette Kehoe -- a huge flag made from coiled and painted fire hose. I'm sure the art work will soon be on display in Fire Station No. 1.

The 2012 Golden Fine Arts Festival is in full swing this weekend - Saturday through Sunday, August 18-19 from 10 am to 5 pm. The juried festival and open-air gallery features a variety of media for sale, food and beverage vendors, entertainment, kids' activities, and more. The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra will cap off the weekend Sunday in Parfet Park at 6:30 pm.  Bring your family, friends, a blanket, and a picnic and lie back for a musical treat: light classical pieces, patriotic marches, and Broadway tunes.

There are new award-winners in Golden. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Gary Wink received the Governor's Downtowner of the Year award from Downtown Colorado Inc. and last year's bike race was named Best Promotional Event by the same organization. These awards will be presented during a celebration dinner on September 13.

But there are even more people, businesses, and organizations deserving of recognition. I'd like the community's help in making nominations for the Mayor's Awards for Excellence, given for out-of-the ordinary service to our community. The nominees may be individuals who have stepped in to fill a specific need or dedicated their energies over an extended period of time. Past individual winners have been recognized for taking initiative, exercising leadership, solving problems, and serving as role models. Award-winning businesses or organizations have worked to make great things happen in Golden by effecting positive change or creating community value.

Detailed information on the awards and a link to nomination forms can be found at http://www.cityofgolden.net/government/city-council/mayors-awards-for-excellence/. Please name someone or some group you admire to receive one of these awards, which will be announced on Wednesday, October 10 at Fossil Trace Golf Club. The same evening, I will present the third annual State of the Community address--focusing on the innovation, collaboration, and engagement so integral to our civic life.
